Duties and Responsibilities

The post holder will play a major role in implementing and conducting clinical trials as part of the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN) and UCL Huntington's disease (HD) clinical research teams, at all stages from phase 1B to phase 3 trials. Specific responsibilities include: monitoring patients entering and participating in trials; conducting clinical assessments resulting in high quality clinical data; providing an expert information source for other members of the research team, patients, carers and health care professionals; and contributing to data analysis and research outputs. The post holder will also maintain the NHNN HD clinical database of patients and coordinate the European HD Network Registry study at the London site, including close liaison with the Dementia and Neurodegenerative Diseases Research Network (DeNDRoN).

The post is available immediately and is funded for twelve months in the first instance by grants from the European Union and (DeNDRoN).

Key Requirements

BioHealth Computing EM is a one year MSc programme, open to well motivated students who have completed one year MSc course (60 ECTS), or equivalent degree in the fields of: Clinical Research, Environmental and Animal Health, Molecular Biotechnology, and Computational Mathematics. BioHealth Computing EM is organized in 2 semesters followed at two different Partner Universities, that will be both in charge of awarding credits (30:30 ECTS), and Ms degrees to the student. Thus early stage CEA-predictions related to different development scenarios will be obtained; we estimate that this can be completely done for 2-3 modalities. Direct modeling can be expected to be performed for 1 or 2 diagnostic modalities. As data on the progress of the various projects will gradually become available, explicit MTA activities will start from year 3 of the project per February 2011.The project will be executed in close cooperation with the University of Twente.

The variation between (groups of) subjects, which is usually expressed as sums or ratios of variance components, must be estimated to be able to conduct statistical inferences on the risk factors and the disease outcomes. The functions of variance components determine for instance the standard error of the estimates of the fixed effects.

In particular medical applications the functions of these variance components are of interest themselves or require special attention. Indeed, in measurement agreement studies and in heritability studies the ratio of variance components is one of the main focuses of the study. For meta-analysis heterogeneity between the different studies is tested and the size of heterogeneity can be expressed by a type of ratio of variance components. Furthermore, for the estimation of reference values on healthy subjects, the sum of variance components plays an important role. The PhD student will conduct statistical research on these ratios and sums of variance components in these different application areas.

Eligibility Criteria:

A master in a quantitative science (e.g. mathematics, econometrics, or social sciences).
Strong interest in a combination of theoretical and practical statistical research.
Interest in medical applications.
Expert knowledge in the software package SAS or R.
Excellent English language skills, both written and spoken.Excellent communication skills.

Compensation:

Maximum salary amount in Euro’s a month € 2673,-.
Employment basis: UMCG, Groningen.
Duration of contract: 1-3,5 years.
A temporary full time appointment as PhD student for one year with the perspective of prolongation with another two and a half years.
